In case you haven't picked up on it based on the media and the attitudes of the activists, supporting Black Lives Matter isn't views as something that is optional.

We've finally seen that Major League Baseball is finally underway though it's limping as though they pulled a hammy.

What we have been is a bunch of players kneeling as part of their cute little demonstration to support Black Lives Matter.

During the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals games, every single player took a knee during the National Anthem.

But then when it was time for the San Francisco Giants to play their first game, everyone took a knee as well...except for one person, relief pitcher Sam Coonrod.

Coonrod cited his Christian faith as why he felt unable to kneel during the showing of support for the Black Lives Matter movement because of their public stance on several issues which are antithetical to the teachings of Christianity.

In particular, Coonrod said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, “I’m a Christian. I can’t get on board on a couple of things I’ve read about Black Lives Matter, how they lean toward Marxism and said some negative things about the nuclear family.” Later in the interview, he added

“I meant no ill will by it. I don’t think I’m better than anybody. I’m just a Christian. I believe I can’t kneel before anything but God, Jesus Christ. I chose not to kneel. I feel if I did kneel I’d be a hypocrite. I don’t want to be a hypocrite.”

This position should be understandable by anyone with an open mind. Not only did Coonrod demonstrate humility with his response, he explicitly stated he felt he would be a hypocrite if he did kneel.

Christianity has historically taught of the importance of the nuclear family and for people to demonstrate their faith by loving their family, neighbors, and all people. The family is viewed as being a symbol for God’s relationship with his people both in the roles of father and children and also as bridegroom and bride.

Until fairly recently, Christianity has also been universally understood to be at odds with Marxism. In addition, several other aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement are divergent from the teachings of Christianity.

Despite acknowledging these facts, the Chronicler sought to minimize Coonrod’s concerns, suggesting he “was referring to comments made five years ago by a Black Lives Matter co-founder, acknowledging she was a Marxist, cited repeatedly now by some conservative commentators.” However, the Chronicler chose to ignore the official position of the Black Lives Matter organization. On their website, they state several positions which should make Coonrod’s misgivings more obvious:

“We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege”

“We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure”

“We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking”
