Universities across the country continue to get more and more liberal. Count the University of Michigan in those universities. They are starting to teach students how to defend against hate crimes. The University of Michigan hosts Anti-Islamophobia self defense workshops.

According to the event description:

“Each workshop will focus primarily on how to defend from attacks that are common in hate crimes, such as shoves, multiple strikes to the face, and scarf/turban grabbing.”

The instructor is named Maryam Aziz. She is a second degree black belt and the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment’s chief self-defense instructor. Also, she has been labeled as an “anti-hate crime and anti-Islamophobia martial arts/self-defense instructor.”

On top of that, Aziz is a grad student instructor at U of M. Aziz studies black power, black arts, black popular culture, African American studies, people of color nationalism, gender and self-defense, and martial arts social movements.

Currently, Maryam Aziz is putting together a curriculum that will help community organizations teach self-defense mechanisms to the communities who are dealing with Islamophobia.
