A former Texas sixth-grade teacher is going to be spending 60 days in prison after having a three-year relationship with a student of hers. During the relationship, the student was 12 to 15 years old. The sentence will not begin until June 2023 because she is currently pregnant.
32-year-old Marka Bodine plead guilty to the charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child and was sentenced by Harris County Judge George Glass to 60 days in prison and 10 years of probation.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was shocked by the light sentence as they were pushing for 20 years in prison.
“I’m heartbroken for the complainant and his family. I’m really disappointed in the outcome as a prosecutor – a child abuse prosecutor, and I’m disappointed as a citizen of Harris County,” Harris County Prosecutor Janna Oswald, chief of the Crimes Against Children Division said to NBC2.
The case became known when Bodine reported the student she had a relationship with for threatening to harm himself. This launched an investigation where the student confirmed he had a three-year relationship with Bodine. The relationship began with the two playing Fortnite and eventually progressed to text messages. The relationship turned sexual when the boy turned 13. She had sent around 40 explicit images to the boy.
During the course of the relationship, Bodine had gone through a divorce and moved into the same apartment complex as the boy.
Is this woman privilege?
The movement for gender equality must include equal punishment!
