A legendary figure is bidding farewell to his career.

Chris Mortensen, the pioneer NFL insider for ESPN, has declared his retirement. While he initially made the decision quietly in April, the luminary chose to share the news with the public on Tuesday.

“Excited about another season but it’s time to reveal after my 33rd NFL draft in April, I made a decision to step away from ESPN and focus on my health, family and faith,” Mortenses posted to X. “The gratitude and humility is overwhelming. It’s not a classic retirement. I’ll still be here talking ball. It’s just time. God Bless you all.”

Since 2016, Mortensen has been fighting esophageal cancer.

Set to turn 72 this November, Mortensen became a part of ESPN in 1991 and quickly emerged as one of the network's leading NFL insiders. His battle with throat cancer led him to take a hiatus in 2016, but following effective treatment, he made a triumphant return.

Many people heaped praise on Mortensen after the announcement.

Congratulations on an incredible career and best wishes in retirement, Chris!
