At an ICE controlled detention center, some detainees went berserk after they were told that they were going to have to be tested for the coronavirus.
This happened after some of the detainees started complaining of having multiple symptoms of COVID-19. Once they were informed that there were going to have to get tested at the medical area of the facility, they started getting out of control and violently attacked the guards and then proceeded to barricade themselves inside.
While barricaded, they began trashing the detention center even ripping out pipes and washing machines. All-in-all their violence resulted in about $25,000 in damages.
For whatever reason, the detainees didn't want to be transferred which is what led to the violence.
“This all started because a group of 10 detainees each reported having at least two symptoms of COVID-19,” said Sheriff Hodgson. “The health care professionals told them they had to be tested in the medical unit because of the reported symptoms.”
“The detainees refused to go to the medical unit for testing. Our medical team alerted me, and I advised the detainees that for their health and the health of fellow detainees and our staff, they needed to be tested at the medical unit,” Hodgson went on.
“The detainees refused to comply, became combatant and ultimately put the lives of themselves and many Bristol County officers at risk with their reckless actions,” he said.
According to the report, no staff members were actually injured from the squabble. However, there were three inmates that were taken to the hospital but nothing was very serious.
If this is the way that they're going to act when people try to treat to take care of their needs, then I say turn them around and send them packing.
