When Gavin Newsom started running attack ads on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis around the 4th of July weekend, many speculated he was setting up for a presidential run. Newsom claims that actually wasn't the motivation.
The California Governor claims that the reason for the ads was DeSantis’ treatment of the Special Olympics. The state of Florida threatened to fine the organization $27.5 million if it didn’t drop its COVID-19 vaccine mandate before the 2022 USA Games in Orlando last month. Special Olympics officials complied.
“He did something that tipped me very directly, and that was going after the Special Olympics. I had an emotional response to that,” Newsom said. “That led to the consideration of doing something a little bit more expressive and that was the determination on the ad.”

Newsom went a step further and described claims he may be running for president as "nonsensical."
“Nonsensical in this respect that I’ll be meeting with the vice president in a moment: my old friend, colleague, Californian, the vice president of the United States,” Newsom said Friday before having lunch with VP Kamala Harris. “It’s a non-starter.”
In the ad, which was shown in Florida, Newsom said “freedom is under attack in your state”
“Freedom is under attack in [Florida]… In California [we] still believe in #freedom. Freedom of speech. Freedom to choose. Freedom from hate. And the freedom to love. Don’t let them take your freedom.”

Call me crazy, but the ad absolutely seemed to be lining up a run at the presidency.
Ron DeSantis responded to the ad by pointing out people are moving away from California to Florida in droves.
