Deputies from the sheriff's department, acting on reports about a California second-grade teacher supposedly driving to school under the influence, noted her apparent impairment as she was instructing students on Monday morning.

57-year-old Wendy Munson was arrested and faces charges of driving with a blood alcohol content exceeding ".08 percent," operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and child endangerment with potential for significant bodily harm, as detailed in a press release from the Sutter County Sheriff's Department.

A colleague from Nuestro Elementary School in Live Oak reportedly alerted the authorities. When police arrived, they found Munson actively teaching her class.

Upon failing a field sobriety test, she was taken into custody around 8:20 a.m., as stated by the police. Munson's bail has been established at $5,000, as shown on the Sutter County Jail's inmate list.

Almost two hours post her initial encounter with the deputies, Munson's blood alcohol concentration was close to double the permitted limit, as stated in the release.

The Nuestro Elementary School District Superintendent, Baljinder Dhillon, sent a letter to parents informing them that Munson had been peacefully escorted from the school grounds and detained. The arrest wasn't witnessed by the students, highlighted Dhillon.

The letter conveyed, "While we are limited in what we can share, as this is both a personnel matter and a matter being investigated by law enforcement, we can let you know that your 2nd graders will have a long-term substitute." It further emphasized, "Our students' safety and well-being remain our highest priority… We appreciate our staff for promptly reporting concerns to administration and appreciate the Sheriff's Department for responding quickly with minimal disruption."

Furthermore, the sheriff's department indicated the availability of video evidence showing the teacher arriving at school while impaired.

Munson is set for arraignment at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. It remains unconfirmed by the Sutter County District Attorney's Office whether she has secured legal representation.
