In an interview released on Tuesday, singer Demi Lovato clarified her reasons for reverting to "she/her" pronouns in addition to "they/them" since August 2022, after initially coming out as non-binary in 2021.
Lovato, a 30-year-old pop music sensation, discussed with GQ Hype Spain how it had become "absolutely exhausting" to constantly have to justify the use of these pronouns when referring to herself.
“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,” Lovato stated, per Page Six. “It was absolutely exhausting.”
“I just got tired,” she continued. “But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

The artist behind the hit "Sober" had earlier discussed her choice to identify as "she/her" again in 2022, attributing the decision to her experiencing a stronger connection with her feminine side during that period.
“Yeah, so, they/them is, um, I’ve actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again with me,” Lovato said during a 2022 interview. “So for me, I’m such a fluid person that I don’t really… I don’t find that I am… I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced and my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said women and men, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman.”
Not long after the news broke about the pronoun shift, Lovato stirred up uncertainty regarding her complete abandonment of "they/them". Observant fans noted that the singer had updated her Instagram bio to include "she/her/they/them", which remains the same to this day.
