According to Bloomberg, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is considering a ban on natural gas stoves, following a study that found these appliances can emit harmful pollution.

Per a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, gas-burning stoves, which are present in 35% of American households, are responsible for about 12.7% of childhood asthma cases in the U.S. This presents a similar asthma risk as exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke. In response, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is considering either prohibiting the manufacture and import of gas stoves or introducing new regulations to limit the emissions produced by these appliances, according to Bloomberg.

"This is a hidden hazard," said Richard Trumka Jr., a CPSC commissioner, in an interview with Bloomberg. "Any option is on the table. Products that can't be made safe can be banned."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has previously asked its staff to gather data and perspectives from the public on the potential hazards posed by gas stoves and proposed solutions to address these dangers. According to a January 2022 study published by the American Chemical Society, the Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization have declared that the levels of nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and soot released by gas stoves are associated with respiratory illness, cardiovascular issues, and cancer.

A spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) told the Daily Caller News Foundation, "The Commission has not proposed regulatory action at this time. Commission staff is also working with voluntary standards organizations to examine gas stove emissions and address potential hazards."

In December 2022, Democratic Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and 20 other Democratic lawmakers called on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to address the emissions from gas stoves, stating that this pollution disproportionately affects minority and low-income households. CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka told Bloomberg that the agency will allow the public to comment on the health concerns associated with gas stoves later in the winter.
