Eminem has demanded that Republican 2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy stop using his songs, issuing a letter to rescind the licensing agreement that Ramaswamy’s campaign established with music licenser BMI.

At the Iowa State fair in early August, Ramaswamy performed Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”. On August 23, a BMI representative relayed to Ramaswamy’s attorney that Eminem was not in favor of "the Ramaswamy campaign’s use of Eminem’s musical compositions." The communication further indicated Eminem’s wish for BMI to “remove all Eminem Works from the Agreement.”

The letter clearly mentioned, “This letter serves as notice that the Eminem Works are excluded from the Agreement effective immediately.” It further warned that any subsequent use of Eminem’s songs by the Vivek 2024 campaign would be deemed a significant breach of the agreement, for which BMI retains all rights and potential actions.

In his college days, Ramaswamy, who went by the stage name “Da Vek,” frequently performed “Lose Yourself.” He is also said to have sung the track at a Canadian karaoke bar during a holiday.

Speaking about Eminem, Ramaswamy has mentioned, “I did not grow up in the circumstances he did,” but emphasized that the sentiment of “people having low expectations of you, that part speaks to me.” Ramaswamy's father held roles as an engineer and patent attorney for General Electric, while his mother pursued a profession in geriatric psychiatry.

Historically in 2000, Sting approached George W. Bush to refrain from using his track “Brand New Day.” Miles Copeland, Sting’s manager, commented that Sting, being British, did not wish to politically align in the U.S election as he was a "guest" in the country. Copeland deemed such use impolite and was cited by Salon saying he'd advise the Gore campaign, who also utilized the song, to discontinue its use, though this never transpired. Interestingly, Sting and Gore later shared a brunch in 2009.
