Winona Ryder revealed she felt blacklisted by Miramax in the past, linking it to an encounter with Harvey Weinstein.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ryder noticed Miramax showed little interest in her. She shared with Esquire an experience she believes contributed to this. Ryder unknowingly upset Weinstein, the company’s co-founder, who is now imprisoned on multiple sexual assault charges.
Ryder recalled one particular meeting with Weinstein at the Miramax office. She extended her hand, they shook hands, had a conversation, and then she left. It seemed like an ordinary meeting to her.
But, she later learned that Weinstein saw it differently. Ryder recounted getting screamed at by an agent afterwards. The agent asked, “What the fuck did you do?” Confused, Ryder realized she had somehow offended Weinstein, possibly by simply offering her hand.
Ryder had worked with Miramax before on the 1993 film “The House of the Spirits.” She recalled another strange incident with Weinstein during that time.
He pounded on her trailer door, eager to discuss casting her in a film adaptation of the play “Little Voice.” Ryder had just seen the play in London and insisted that Jane Horrocks, the original actress, should be cast. This suggestion made Weinstein act oddly before leaving.
“He did not like me,” Ryder concluded.
Despite these tensions, Ryder clarified that she did not experience sexual misconduct during her encounters with Weinstein.
