Actor and Academy Award nominee Thomas Haden Church appeared on the "Debatable" podcast this week to discuss the 2022 Oscars. He told hosts Mark Goodman and Alan Light that actor Will Smith should be permanently banned from future Academy Awards, arguing that Smith gave a "pathetic excuse" for his actions.
On Sunday, Smith got out of his seat at the awards show, walked up on stage, and struck Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Smith.
Church declared that Smith's explanation for striking Rock was "a pretty pathetic excuse that he was doing it out of love, out of protection for Jada."

While he did acknowledge Smith's Oscar Award to be a legitimate win and doesn't think it should be revoked, he still believes the actor should be banned for his childish actions.
"I think that Will Smith should be banned from the Oscars for the rest of his life. I think he should have his Academy membership stripped, but I don't think he should have the Oscar taken from him." Church said, "They're mutually exclusive, his accomplishments in the movie and the movie itself, it's not related to his actions."
After the encounter, the Academy tweeted that they "have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."
The Academy does not condone violence of any form.
Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.
