Donald Trump has shifted his stance on Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. Just weeks ago, Trump labeled Kemp a "bad guy" and an "average governor." Now, Trump is praising him.
On Truth Social, Trump thanked Kemp for his "help and support in Georgia." He emphasized the importance of winning in the state for the success of the Party and the country. "I look forward to working with you, your team, and all of my friends in Georgia," Trump added.
This post came shortly after Kemp appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. Kemp expressed his support for electing Republicans, including Trump. "We’ve got to win. We cannot afford another four years of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris," Kemp said.
He also stressed the need to send Trump back to the White House. Kemp mentioned the importance of retaking the Senate, holding the House, and keeping legislative majorities in Georgia.
Concerns have been rising in Georgia about Trump’s previous criticism of Kemp. Polling in the state has tightened between Trump and Kamala Harris. Some Republicans worry about the GOP's ground game and turnout in Georgia.
Kemp, known for his strong ground game, said Republicans have been working hard. They’ve been out knocking on doors and turning out the base for the entire ticket. Hannity, close to Trump, asked Kemp about election integrity. Kemp assured that the 2024 election will be “secure, accessible, and fair,” citing the Election Integrity Act of 2021.
A person familiar with the situation said Trump likely appreciated Kemp’s appearance on Hannity's show. This prompted Trump’s sudden change of heart.
Later, in an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier, Trump praised Kemp. "He said he wants Trump to win, and he’s going to work with me 100 percent," Trump said. Trump believes they will have a good relationship.
Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, also spoke with Kemp. Vance is convinced that Kemp supports the ticket because of his concerns about Harris’s policies.
Kemp’s team stated that his comments on Fox News reflect his long-held position of supporting the nominee and working hard to win Georgia. While Kemp hasn’t endorsed Trump, he confirmed earlier this year that he would support the GOP ticket in the fall.
As Trump’s lead in Georgia narrows, his campaign is investing heavily in the state. Over $20 million is being spent on advertising, with a pro-Trump super PAC adding Georgia to a massive $100 million ad buy.
Trump's truce with Kemp was anticipated. Republican operatives in Georgia expected the two men to eventually come together.
Two weeks ago, Trump took credit for Kemp’s election win. He expressed a desire to repair their relationship. Kemp recently reiterated his support for Trump, despite previous tensions. “My position has not changed,” Kemp said. “I’m going to support the nominee and win Georgia.”
