Special Guest at the RNC Steals the Show With a Big Surprise

One guest at the Republican National Convention's night two festivities stole the show. Babydog, the canine companion of Gov. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., became the center of attention. She didn't even give a speech.

Babydog had her own chair on stage while the governor spoke. Chants of "Babydog!" echoed as the governor entered. "I know that a lot of you want to meet my little buddy," said Justice. "So if Babydog could come on out here."

The dog trotted out to roaring applause. She was set up in her own seat beside him.

Who is Babydog? She's one of three canines owned by Justice and his family. They also have two Boston terriers, Lucy and Ellie. Babydog was born on October 27, 2019, and will turn 5 later this year.

Justice's son and daughter surprised their parents with Babydog for Christmas in 2019. "Since then, she has become a favorite among West Virginians," a spokesperson said. Babydog travels with the Governor and rivals his popularity.

Babydog is an English bulldog. She's white, tan, and brown, with stubby legs and an abundance of face folds. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she became a mascot for Justice's vaccination sweepstakes.

According to the West Virginia governor's official website, Babydog makes everyone smile. She accompanies the Governor to events and has become a political mainstay.

Babydog is featured on Justice's Senate campaign website. The site describes her as the heart of the campaign team. She symbolizes warmth, love, and connection. Merchandise featuring Babydog, including T-shirts, mugs, and koozies, is sold by the campaign team.

Justice has won the Republican Senate primary in West Virginia. He is expected to win the U.S. Senate race in November against Wheeling's Democratic Mayor Glenn Elliott. The Cook Political Report rated the race "Solid Republican" with Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., not seeking re-election.

Justice told Fox News' Brian Kilmeade that Babydog will accompany him to the Senate if elected. "Absolutely," he said, though she may not follow him into "all the different halls." But she'll make the trip.
