Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lost his U.S. Secret Service protection on Monday. This happened just days after he exited the 2024 presidential race.
Kennedy's press secretary confirmed the news to CBS. He had gone through a lengthy process to get this protection. His initial requests were denied earlier in the campaign.
It wasn’t until July, after an assassination attempt on former President Trump, that things changed. President Biden then ordered Secret Service protection for Kennedy.
"In light of this weekend's events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy, Jr.," said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This was shortly after Trump's shooting.
Despite the protection, Kennedy withdrew from the race on Friday. He also endorsed Trump.
On Sunday, Kennedy talked about the "unity government" he's now supporting with Trump. He said Trump agreed to focus on key issues from his campaign. These include ending the war in Ukraine, fighting censorship, and improving children's health in the U.S.
Trump’s campaign pollsters say Kennedy’s supporters are shifting toward Trump. Before Kennedy's exit, he was polling at 5% or 6% in swing states like Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Kennedy hinted at more announcements from the unity government. "This is only the beginning. Wait till you see the next additions to President Trump’s Unity Government," he posted on X.
Earlier Sunday, Kennedy was on "Fox News Sunday" with Shannon Bream. He defended his decision to back Trump, despite past criticisms. He said Americans can disagree but still work together on common goals.
