McDonald's Gives Classic Menu Item a 'Makeover' Amid Slumping Sales

Less than a year ago, McDonald's removed the iconic spindles from their McFlurry desserts. Now, they're giving the treat a "makeover" to combat declining sales.

Starting Tuesday, McDonald's will introduce the "Mini McFlurry." It will join the regular size, and both will be served in a "more environmentally friendly four-flap cup" as part of their shift away from plastic lids.

"Packaging updates like this matter," said Michael Gonda, McDonald's chief impact officer for North America. He added, "It's a fun new way for our U.S. fans to enjoy the McFlurry, while we also move closer to our packaging and waste goals."

McDonald's emphasized that the new design aligns with their sustainability efforts. They aim to source "100% of primary guest packaging from renewable, recycled, or certified materials by the end of 2025."

The four-flap cups aren't entirely new. They're already being used in some international markets.

Right now, McDonald's online menu lists Oreo and M&M's McFlurries. Occasionally, they introduce limited-time flavors like Kit Kat Banana Split.

In July, McDonald's reported its first sales decline in years. Rising menu prices have been a challenge, driving away some cash-strapped customers.

Global sales dropped 1% in the second quarter, a significant dip from a 0.53% rise predicted by analysts.

To bring back customers, fast-food chains are launching various promotions, hoping to navigate the tough inflationary landscape.
