Friend actor Matthew Perry talked about his struggles with addiction and how he went through "hell" to defeat it.
“There is a hell,” the actor said in his new book — “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir” — which is due out on November 1. “Don’t let anyone tell you different. I’ve been there; it exists; end of discussion.”
Perry built up such a tolerance that he was taking 55 Vicodin a day on top of drinking alcohol and taking Xanax. He said once it got to a certain point, being an addiction was all about "math."
“When you’re a drug addict, it’s all math. I wasn’t doing it to feel high or to feel good. I certainly wasn’t a partyer; I just wanted to sit on my couch, take five Vicodin and watch a movie,” he said. “That was heaven for me. It no longer is.”
He admitted he probably spent millions trying to get sober. “I’ve probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober,” he said.
During the full interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Perry explained that a near-death experience saved him.
I'm happy Matthew Perry is doing better and that he gets to tell his story (that I'm certain will help many people) but not to be lost in all of this is that Diane Sawyer is BACK!, doing what she does so well i.e. one-on-one interviews: pic.twitter.com/0fZxP22Uff

“The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live,” he explained. He was put on an ECMO machine that functioned for his heart and lungs — a move that he referred to as “a Hail Mary” — and he had to wear a colostomy bag for nearly a year after that.
Ultimately it was just the thought of the colostomy bag that scared him from losing his battle with sobriety. A therapist told him to think about that bag every time he considered using drugs. “A little window opened, and I crawled through it, and I no longer want OxyContin,” he said.
