This week, conservative commentator Matt Walsh effectively silenced a Tennessee politician with a straightforward inquiry regarding surgeries for minors who identify as transgender.

During a hearing of the Tennessee House Health Committee, which was focused on House Bill 1, a proposed legislation that would prohibit minors from undergoing transformative surgeries related to their gender identity, State Representative Caleb Hemmer (D) received a surprise when he asked Walsh about a topic unrelated to the matter being discussed.

During the hearing, Hemmer brought up comments made by Walsh several years prior in which Walsh expressed his concern over the prolongation of adolescence in contemporary Western society. In these remarks, Walsh noted that what is now known as the adolescent or teenage years was once considered the onset of adulthood.

"How does that relate to this subject?" Walsh asked.

"Just curious of your definition, if you feel like people are adults at 16..." Hemmer replied.

"No. People are adults at 18," Walsh interjected. "But, actually, your brain is not fully developed until you're 25. So, we should be having a conversation about whether we should even be doing the surgeries when people are 18. But, certainly, before 18, it's absurd."
