BBC host Maryam Moshiri was inadvertently recorded making a rude gesture just before her midday broadcast on Wednesday, and the video of this occurrence has become popular on social media.

“I’m so sorry it went out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen and I’m sorry if I offended or upset anyone. I wasn’t ’flipping the bird’ at viewers or even a person really,” Moshiri tweeted.

The news anchor was seen on camera making the gesture as the countdown for the broadcast reached zero. She briefly smiled broadly before regaining her composure upon realizing that she was live on air.

“Live from London, this is BBC News,” Moshiri said, introducing her regularly scheduled program, “Prime Minister’s Questions.”

Moshiri explained on Thursday that the incident caught on camera was part of a "private joke" shared with her production team.
