Before the speech, McCarthy had pledged to avoid the type of "dramatics" demonstrated by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) when she tore up her copy of then-President Donald Trump's speech in 2020. However, during President Biden's address, McCarthy appeared to have difficulty maintaining a neutral expression when he disagreed with what was being said.

During Biden's discussion of infrastructure and his assertion that the US had dropped from first to thirteenth place globally, Newsmax's Benny Johnson shared a short video clip and commented, "Unfortunately, Joe has started shouting during his State of the Union speech."

However, it was Bonchie from RedState who observed McCarthy's disinterested look towards the end of the video, as Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, rose to clap, adding "Kevin McCarthy’s face at the end of this clip … lol."

“McCarthy’s face is priceless,” Miranda Devine of the New York Post tweeted.

“McCarthy’s facial expressions are gold,” former Trump adviser and counsel Jenna Ellis added.
