Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ future remains uncertain after her election loss to President Donald Trump.
Harris has been consulting family and close friends about her next steps. Among them is Hillary Clinton, who shares the rare experience of a similar defeat. According to New York Magazine, the two have spoken several times since Harris’ loss.
Speculation surrounds Harris’ next move. Some believe she might run for governor of California next year, as Gov. Gavin Newsom faces term limits. Others think she’s still eyeing the Oval Office and could launch a presidential bid in 2028. Shortly after the election, Harris reportedly told advisors not to rule out her return to the race.
Harris hasn’t directly outlined her plans but has hinted at staying in politics. Just before her vice presidency ended, she addressed staff while signing her desk drawer, a long-standing tradition. In her remarks, she said, "I will not go quietly into the night," adding, "our work is not done."
Her comments mirrored her concession speech, where she told supporters, "While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign."
After her 2020 presidential campaign ended, Harris found a new path as Joe Biden’s running mate. While Biden initially suggested he’d serve only one term, he launched a re-election campaign in 2023.
However, his re-election bid took a turn after a disastrous debate and a near-fatal attack on Trump at a rally. Biden dropped out in July 2024 and endorsed Harris, propelling her to the top of the ticket. Critics argued the move hurt her chances, as voters saw it as a coronation rather than a democratic choice.
Harris and Clinton share more than a history of electoral losses. Both had strong support from Hollywood A-listers, but even Taylor Swift’s endorsement couldn’t make the “Harris Era” a reality.
In her concession speech, Harris reflected, "The outcome of this election is not what we hoped, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But hear when I say … the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting."
