According to a report from Yahoo Sports, Texas Tech University has suspended their men's basketball coach, Mark Adams, due to an interaction with one of the players.
"On Friday, Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt was made aware of an incident regarding a coaching session between Adams and a member of the men’s basketball team," the school said in a statement, according to Yahoo. "Adams was encouraging the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters. Adams immediately addressed this with the team and apologized. Upon learning of the incident, Hocutt addressed this matter with Adams and issued him a written reprimand. Hocutt subsequently made the decision to suspend Adams effective immediately in order to conduct a more thorough inquiry of Adams’ interactions with his players and staff."
However, when speaking to Stadium, a sports network, Adams recounted a slightly different version of events.
During his conversation with Stadium, Mark Adams denied making racist comments and stated that he had merely quoted a Bible verse when telling a player there is “always a master and a servant.”
“I was quoting the Scripture,” Adams said to Stadium. “It was a private conversation about coaching and when you have a job and being coachable.”
Adams continued, "I said that in the Bible that Jesus talks about how we all have bosses and we all are servants. I was quoting the Bible about that.”
He also cleared up that he explained the situation to the team the following day and he did not apologize: “One of my coaches said it bothered the player. I explained to them. I didn’t apologize.”
Stadium also disclosed that insiders claimed a member of the staff had informed Hocutt about the incident towards the end of last week and that Hocutt had subsequently contacted the player's family.
On Monday, TheBlaze inquired with Texas Tech University whether Mark Adams had used the terms "slave" or "slaves" during his interaction with the player, and if he had informed the college about the particular Bible verse he had cited. However, Texas Tech did not reply to the queries before the publication deadline on Monday.
According to Yahoo Sports, Mark Adams is currently in his second year as the head coach of the Texas Tech basketball team. In the previous season, the team had a record of 27-10 and made it to the Sweet 16, but lost to Duke. As of now, the team has a record of 16-15. Stadium reported that Adams still has over $7 million left on his contract, and the team will be playing against West Virginia on Wednesday for the first round of the Big 12 tournament.
