Charlamagne tha God didn’t hold back Monday. He slammed Maine Gov. Janet Mills for her stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
“Why are folks still talking about trans athletes?” he said on The Breakfast Club. “That is a losing talking point. America’s not with it.”
He argued the issue affects a tiny group but makes many people think politicians lack common sense. “So why are they even having that conversation?” he added.
Charlamagne couldn’t believe states were still pushing the debate. “Like none of these states have a high percentage of trans athletes, so what’s the issue?” he asked.
A longtime Trump critic, he’s one of many liberals reflecting on the Democrats’ election loss. Many pointed to the party’s failure to connect with young men and working-class voters.
The radio host reacted to a heated exchange between President Trump and Mills. They clashed over Maine’s transgender policy in girls’ and women’s sports. Trump ended it with an executive order.
At a White House meeting, Trump told Mills to comply. “I’m complying with state and federal laws,” she said. Trump shot back, “Well, we are the federal law.”
"You better do it," he warned. "Because you're not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t."
Mills stood her ground. “We’re going to follow the law, sir. We’ll see you in court,” she said. Trump had the last word. “Enjoy your life after governor,” he said. “I don’t think you’ll be an elected official afterward.”
The Department of Education has now launched a Title IX investigation into Maine. Mills called it an attack on the rule of law.
“No President — Republican or Democrat — can withhold Federal funding to coerce compliance,” she said Friday. “It’s a violation of our Constitution.”
She warned Maine won’t be the last state targeted. “Today, he’s going after one group on one issue,” she said. “But you must ask yourself—who’s next?”
Mills accused Trump of acting like a dictator. “The President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it,” she said. “The rule of law prevents him from being so.”
