The new boyfriend of Maryland mother of five, Rachel Morin, who was found dead on a hiking trail Sunday, firmly denied involvement in her death after police announced a homicide investigation.

Richard Tobin, 27, who has an extensive criminal record, responded to widespread online speculation that he might have been involved in her death by taking to Facebook on Sunday to defend himself.

"I love Rachel, I would never do anything to her, let the family and I grieve. Yes I have a past but I also have 15 months clean and have changed as a person. Please," Tobin wrote under his relationship status, updated on Aug. 1 to reflect that Morin was his girlfriend.

Tobin's criminal history includes prior arrests for malicious destruction of property, criminal second-degree assault, resisting arrest, drug possession, disorderly intoxication, and violating restraining orders, as revealed by Maryland court records.

Despite his past, he has not been named as a suspect in his girlfriend's death, nor has he been accused of any wrongdoing in the case.

He reported her missing on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. after she failed to return home from a hike on the Ma and Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air, Maryland, approximately 30 miles north of Baltimore.

She was last observed at home wearing a dark tank top, black spandex shorts, and gray sneakers, before departing for her hike around 6 p.m.

Her car was discovered at the trailhead's Williams Street entrance and was subsequently taken to the criminal investigations division for examination, according to the police.

The following day, authorities received a 911 call reporting the discovery of a woman's body near the trail, believed to be Morin, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler announced at a press conference.

"I’m not going to go into what, physically, they observed at the scene. But investigators believe, sadly, that it’s a homicide case," Sheriff Gahler stated.

Officials are now awaiting the medical examiner's report to obtain further details, including the cause of death and official confirmation that the body is indeed Morin's.

"This was not an accidentally (sic) death, and she did not go willingly, and she deserves a funeral worthy of her beauty," Morin's sister, Rebekah, penned on a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for her burial.

As Rachel Morin did not have life insurance, any excess funds raised will be directed towards her children's care, the fundraising page explains.

The body of 37-year-old Rachel Morin was found on a hiking trail in Maryland on Sunday, and the police are currently investigating her death as a homicide.

Further compounding the family's grief, the sister disclosed that they had suffered another tragic loss just a week prior, with the death of their niece, Lily Beth, from SIDS.

Rebekah Morin has passionately appealed to anyone with information about her sister's death to contact the Harford County Sheriff's Office, imploring the public to help the family "get justice."

"Rachel Morin I love you and miss you so much," she wrote in a poignant tribute. "Save a place for me."

Attempts to reach Richard Tobin for comment were not immediately successful.
