Tim Tebow received a resounding ovation as he took the stage to collect the Sports Impact Award at the K-LOVE Fan Awards, a moment that left the crowd thrilled and filled with joy.
After expressing his gratitude, the former football star took a moment to show his playful side and teased Christian singer Matthew West, the host of the May 29 event at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.
"Matthew, let's be real, you've never even thought about running a marathon," Tebow joked with West, who had been seen wearing pink shorts in a dancing skit earlier in the event. "Those shorts you wore definitely confirmed it."
As the laughter subsided, Tebow expressed his honor at being given the opportunity to be in the presence of various artists who have had such a significant impact on the contemporary church.
From there he moved his focus to the audience.
The former Florida Gators and NFL quarterback wanted to emphasize to the artists present that fame is not necessary in order to have a meaningful impact on the lives of those whom God places in their path.
“Guys, I just want you to be encouraged because I know it gets hard for so many of you, but you inspire so many people, and I want you to keep going because you have no idea the impact that you’re making on so many people around the world,” the Heisman trophy winner said.
“You inspire people,” Tebow continued. “You know what inspire means? It means to fill someone with the urge to do something, and you do that. You fill people with the urge to want to follow Jesus and don’t stop that. That’s why what you are doing matters. That’s why being here matters.”
Tebow talked about how he was once someone who was very focused on his own sports dreams.
In general, Tebow said, there is nothing wrong with wanting to achieve notable success, but on that particular day, he felt challenged by the Lord to consider the following: "What does it truly mean to be the Most Valuable Player (MVP)? Because on that day, God impacted my heart and made me realize that the MVP I should be striving to be is someone who uplifts the most vulnerable people around the world."
The crowd erupted and some were even pushed to tears.
Check it out:
Tebow continued, “Because ultimately, there is only one MVP, and he died on a cross on a rescue mission for humanity, and he has commanded us to go defend the weak, protect the poor and go after those that are hurting.”
Tebow recognized that this is a "big job," but emphasized the importance of this task and the need for the church to focus on it and work towards achieving it.
