Canadian businessman and "Shark Tank" star Kevin O’Leary says Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would “destroy America” if she ever became president — but credits her as a savvy entrepreneur. His comments came during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner over the weekend. He was asked about a new campaign-style video released by the congresswoman, fueling speculation she may be eyeing a presidential run.
"I think she's the best marketeer in politics. I buy her T-shirts, I gift them the tax the rich T-shirts – I love them,” O’Leary said. “She makes 82% in margin on them, which, I think, shows you that inside of every socialist, there's a capitalist trying to get out." But he didn’t hold back on her politics. "Now, would she destroy America? Absolutely. There's no chance she'll ever be president."
O’Leary added sharp criticism of her record. "Her district is a wasteland," he said. "Why would anybody want her running anything? But I love what she does on T-shirts, so maybe she should start a T-shirt company." Despite disagreeing with her views, he praised her social media strategy, calling her “a crazy chicken.”
Ocasio-Cortez has been on the road in recent weeks, joining Sen. Bernie Sanders on a "Fight Oligarchy" tour. The events are aimed at opposing President Donald Trump’s policies. Large crowds and energized supporters have fueled more speculation that she’s testing the waters for a 2028 presidential campaign.
Adding to that buzz, Ocasio-Cortez posted a polished campaign-style video to her social media last week. It showcased her platform and messaging, sparking conversation about her national ambitions. Her growing presence on the political stage continues to stir both enthusiasm and concern.
Political analyst Nate Silver recently named Ocasio-Cortez the top Democrat positioned to win the 2028 nomination. He made the remark during a FiveThirtyEight discussion with Galen Druke. While still speculative, it’s a signal of how seriously her name is being taken inside political circles.
"I think there's a lot of points in her favor at this very moment," Druke said. He noted her broad appeal within the Democratic Party. With an energized base and strong social media presence, Ocasio-Cortez has become a leading figure in the party’s progressive wing.
Whether she runs or not, Ocasio-Cortez remains a national lightning rod. Her critics view her as radical, while her supporters see her as fearless. And even those who oppose her politics — like O’Leary — admit she knows how to sell a message.
