During a press briefing at the White House, a reporter corrected the White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, regarding the facts of a school shooting that occurred in Nashville, Tennessee, doing so directly in front of her.
According to the police, on Monday, an active shooter, identified as a 28-year-old female, entered Covenant School through a side door and killed three children and three adults. The suspect was confronted by the police on the second floor of the building and was subsequently shot and killed.
Following a briefing on the tragedy, Jean-Pierre made an erroneous statement regarding the victims.
“We can’t keep seeing what we saw today. Right now, we’re hearing six kids — six elementary [school] kids dead,” Jean-Pierre.
“Three kids and three adults,” a reporter interrupted.
According to the authorities, the shooter, who remains unidentified, was in possession of at least two assault-style rifles and a handgun. The shooter opened fire on both the first and second floors of the building, and was confronted by the police and killed at 10:27 a.m.
At the beginning of the briefing, Jean-Pierre attributed blame to Republicans for their opposition towards implementing an "assault weapons ban."
“He [President Joe Biden] wants Congress to act,” Jean-Pierre said. “Because enough is enough. In his State of the Union, the president called on Congress to do something, to stop the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing families apart, tearing communities apart. How many more children have to be murdered before Republicans in Congress will step up and act to stop the assault weapons ban?”
Throughout his presidency, President Joe Biden has made multiple promises to prohibit "assault rifles" following a string of mass shootings.
“I call on Congress again to pass my assault weapons ban,” Biden said while addressing the shooting. “It’s about time that we begin to make some more progress.”
Over the past two years, the Biden administration has been witness to several significant mass shootings, including those at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and a Lunar New Year event in Monterey Park, California.
