A man is facing charges after trampling the growing memorial for Charlie Kirk outside Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix on Sunday.
Cameras caught the suspect stomping through flowers, vases, and flags, toppling the tributes left behind by mourners. One man at the scene stepped in, yanking the vandal away from the memorial and throwing him to the ground.
Phoenix police later identified the suspect as 19-year-old Ryder Corral. In footage of his arrest, Corral is seen wearing a black shirt with an American flag and eagle — a shirt eerily similar to the one worn by Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Kirk.
Robinson allegedly shot and killed Kirk at Utah Valley University just days earlier. He was arrested on Friday after a frantic 33-hour manhunt that stretched across the state.
Police said Corral was taken into custody without further incident. He is being held at Maricopa County Jail on one count of criminal damage and one count of disorderly conduct, according to Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Philip Krynsky.
No serious injuries were reported during the confrontation at the memorial. Officers were already on site handling traffic as the community gathered in large numbers to honor Kirk.
The FBI had released surveillance images Thursday showing Robinson in a black flag-graphic shirt, sunglasses, and a hat. Witnesses later confirmed he opened fire on Kirk as he spoke to students and faculty in Orem, Utah.
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital after being struck by a single bullet. The husband and father of two was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. He was 31 years old.
