On Tuesday, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, took a strong stance, diverging from some members of his political party and announced that he was not willing to relinquish the gas stove that his family uses to cook, and he did not anticipate that other Americans would easily give up their own stoves.
Senator Manchin was responding to allegations that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering a prohibition on gas stoves, mainly due to health issues, and he stated that implementing such a ban would be a bad idea.
“This is a recipe for disaster. The federal government has no business telling American families how to cook their dinner. I can tell you the last thing that would ever leave my house is the gas stove that we cook on,” Manchin tweeted.
If this is the greatest concern that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has for American consumers, I think we need to reevaluate the commission.

Manchin went further, suggesting that if this action is to be pursued the commission should re-examine its own practices.
“If this is the greatest concern that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has for American consumers, I think we need to reevaluate the commission,” he said.
However, as soon as the reports surfaced, some people voiced their immediate support.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York promptly advanced the idea that gas stoves lead to a decline in cognitive abilities.

CNN’s Bill Weir added, “The science is showing us having a gas stove, in a small apartment especially with bad ventilation, is like having a car idling there. If you have young kids, it can affect cognitive abilities, as well as asthma.”
However, the alternatives could also pose risks - A report from the National Fire Protection Association in 2020 found that electric stoves were associated with much higher occurrences of injury (nearly five times more), death (3.4 times more) and house fires (2.6 times more) when compared to gas stoves.
Electric stoves are 2.6x more likely to cause fires compared to gas stoves
Households with electric stoves have a 3.4x higher death rate and 5x higher injury rate compared to gas

After receiving negative reactions to the initial reports, the Chairman of the CPSC announced that the commission was not proposing a ban on gas stoves, instead it was researching ways to cut down emissions and improve safety for home usage, particularly in confined spaces and in households with children.
