President Donald Trump’s executive order to declassify the JFK files didn’t impress everyone. Jack Schlossberg, John F. Kennedy’s grandson, made his feelings clear on X. He wrote that there was "nothing heroic" about Trump’s move.
"Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back," Schlossberg posted. "There’s nothing heroic about it."
The order covers files on the assassinations of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. After signing it, Trump told reporters, "everything will be revealed."
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., son of the late senator, praised the move. He called it a "great move" and said it would bring "more transparency." Kennedy believes Trump is keeping his promise to tell the truth to Americans.
Trump’s order stated the release was overdue. "The continued redaction and withholding of information… is not consistent with the public interest," it read.
Officials now have 15 days to plan the release of JFK assassination records. They also have 45 days to develop a plan for RFK and MLK Jr. files.
King’s family issued a statement about the order. They said they "hope to be provided the opportunity to review the files as a family prior to its public release."
Though Trump had promised to release the JFK files earlier, some material remains classified. More than 60 years later, the full story is still under wraps.
Trump previously blocked the files after warnings from the CIA and FBI. He said the risk of release outweighed "public interest" at the time.
In a recent appearance on Hannity, Trump claimed Mike Pompeo asked him not to release the files. He didn’t share if Pompeo gave specific reasons for keeping them classified.
