Iconic Food Storage Brands Closes Final US Plant, Heads South of the Border

Tupperware Brands is shutting down its last U.S. manufacturing plant. The company is moving operations to Mexico. Over 100 workers will lose their jobs.

Last week, Tupperware issued a WARN Notice. They plan to permanently close the Hemingway, South Carolina facility. This will result in 148 layoffs.

Layoffs will start in September. The plant will close by January 2025.

Tupperware stated it sold the Hemingway plant last year. Operations will shift to Lerma, Mexico. Most products for the U.S. and Canada already come from there.

“This decision is not a reflection of the Hemingway team’s performance,” Tupperware said. “We value our team members and their years of service.”

Affected employees will get severance packages and early retirement options. They’ll also have a job fair to connect with other businesses.

Tupperware, based in Orlando, Florida, has had struggles recently. The company has been working on a turnaround plan since 2020. They aim to improve profitability and manage debt.

In an April 2023 SEC filing, Tupperware expressed concern. They doubted their ability to continue operating for another year.

In October, Tupperware appointed a new CEO, Laurie Ann Goldman.
