Hollywood star George Clooney and his wife, Amal, have officially become French citizens along with their two children. A government decree confirmed the news on Monday, marking the end of a long-term goal for the family.
Clooney cited France’s strict privacy laws as a primary reason for the move. He noted that the country’s refusal to allow paparazzi at school gates provides a much safer environment for his children.
The 64-year-old actor admitted that while he loves French culture, he still struggles with the language despite over a year of lessons. His wife, a prominent human rights lawyer, is already fluent in the language.
The family has owned a historic wine estate in southern France since 2021. Clooney told reporters that while they travel frequently, their French home is where the family is truly the happiest.
This move follows a trend of Hollywood figures seeking to distance themselves from the United States. Director Jim Jarmusch recently announced similar plans to apply for French nationality to escape the American political climate.
