Food Network Star Guy Fieri Explains Why He Won't Give His Kids a Free Ride

Guy Fieri, the famous chef known as the Mayor of Flavortown, recently expressed his determination to ensure that his teenage sons don't rely solely on the advantage of their family name for success in life.

“I’ve told them the same thing my dad told me. My dad says, ‘When I die, you can expect that I’m going to die broke, and you’re going to be paying for the funeral,'” Fieri, 55, told Fox News.

“And I told my boys, none of this that we’ve been … that I’ve been building are you going to get unless you come and take it from me.”

The host of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," mentioned in an interview that he expects his children to finish their education with various degrees and to become independent. He shared that his 17-year-old son Ryder has had some difficulties with these expectations set by him.

“My youngest son, Ryder, is a senior in high school getting ready to graduate, or you know, going to graduate in the spring,” Fieri explained. “And he’s like, ‘Dad this is so unfair. I haven’t even gone to college yet, and you’re already pushing that I’ve got to get an MBA? Can I just get through college?'”

Fieri shared with Fox that his guidelines for his children were inspired by the principles of former basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal.

“Shaq said it best,” Fieri stated. “Shaq said it about his kids one time. He says, ‘If you want any of this cheese, you’ve got to give me two degrees.’ Well, my two degrees mean, you know, postgraduate. So they’re on their way.”

Besides their own children, Guy Fieri and his wife Lori became guardians of their nephew Jules, following the passing of his mother in 2011.
