Donald Trump Jr. told an MSNBC reporter to "get out of here" during a tense exchange at the Republican National Convention. This happened after he was asked about his father's immigration policies.
Trump Jr. and his brother Eric were approached for an interview by MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff. It was on the floor of the RNC convention in Milwaukee, where their father, former President Trump, became the GOP nominee just days after an assassination attempt.
Trump Jr. praised his father's accomplishments during his presidency. He rejected Soboroff's question about Trump being "a divisive figure." Trump Jr. blamed the media for creating "divisiveness."
"They lied about Russia, Russia collusion, they said he was a traitor," Trump Jr. said. "If the media starts being honest, talking about his achievements, the prosperity, the peace deals, it would do the country a big favor."
The exchange got heated when Soboroff asked about family separations as part of Trump's immigration policy. He denied Trump Jr.'s claims that it happened under Obama.
"It’s MSDNC, I expect nothing less from you clowns," Trump Jr. retorted. He used the nickname his father often used for the network.
"Even 48 hours later, you couldn’t wait with your lies and nonsense, so just get out of here," he continued, waving away the reporter.
Trump Jr. is known for contentious exchanges with the media. In 2019, he famously sparred with ‘The View’ co-hosts, calling out Joy Behar for wearing blackface.
He shared a photo of his bloodied father after the assassination attempt. "He’ll never stop fighting to Save America," he wrote.
The Saturday shooting at Trump's rally in Pennsylvania altered the convention's tone. One spectator was killed, two critically injured, and a bullet grazed Trump's ear.
The Trump campaign says the former president will call for unity in the face of tragedy at the convention, instead of criticizing his political adversaries.
