Democrat Senator and Longtime Biden Defender Flips on Cognitive Decline of Biden in Office

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told Politico there’s “no doubt” President Joe Biden experienced cognitive decline while in office.

When asked directly if Biden’s cognition slipped during his presidency, Murphy replied, “There’s no doubt about it.” He added, “The debate is whether it was enough that it compromised his ability to act as chief executive.”

Last week on The View, Biden denied suffering significant cognitive decline during the final year of his term. He insisted he remained capable throughout his presidency.

In a CNN interview last year, before Biden exited the 2024 race, Murphy said Biden’s debate performance had “raised questions for voters” about whether he was “still the old Joe Biden.”

At the time, Murphy urged Biden to prove himself. “Show the country that he is still the old Joe Biden,” he said. “I have seen him do this job at an absolutely exceptional level.”

Murphy also admitted Biden’s 2024 run may have hurt Democrats. “I mean, isn’t that self-evident? We lost,” he said. “Clearly people were looking for change and neither Biden nor Harris were going to be able to offer a real message of change.”
