Comedian Rob Schneider is the latest to slam the 2024 Paris Olympics' opening ceremony. He claims it "celebrated Satan" and mocked Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper."
The former "Saturday Night Live" star criticized the event on X. This happened two days after the performance gained global attention.
"I am sorry to say to all the world’s greatest athletes, I wish you all the best, but I cannot watch an Olympics that disrespects Christianity and openly celebrates Satan," Schneider posted.
He added, "I sincerely hope these Olympics get the same amount of viewers as CSPAN."
The performance included a performer with a silvery headdress, drag artists, and dancers. A blue-painted singer, scantily clad, appeared on the table.
On Sunday, Schneider shared an image of the blue performer on X. He captioned it, "Guys with their genitalia hanging out in front of children?! Drag Queens?! I wasn’t sure if I was watching the Olympics, or if I was watching a school board meeting…"
The opening ceremony faced online backlash. Figures like Elon Musk, Harrison Butker, Candace Cameron Bure, Jillian Michaels, and Donald Trump condemned the show.
Christian leaders also opposed the spectacle. Daniel Darling of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary told Fox News Digital, "I was appalled at the grotesque mockery of the Lord's Supper in the opening ceremonies."
However, some supported the ceremony, including First Lady Jill Biden, who called it "spectacular."
Many argue the performance wasn’t mocking "The Last Supper" but portrayed the Feast of Dionysus. Event officials said the performance wasn’t meant to offend.
"My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock," said Thomas Jolly, the ceremony's artistic director. "Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide."
