Bill Maher says he didn’t leave the Democratic Party — because he was never officially in it.
“I never was a Democrat to begin with,” Maher said on his Club Random podcast this weekend. Sitting across from actor Esai Morales, the comedian clarified, “I always caucus with them, and I generally vote for them.” But that doesn’t mean he’s loyal.
Maher said he just sees Democrats as the lesser evil. “They just always are less scary and insane than the Republicans,” he said. “But I wait for the day when it evens out. And we’re approaching that.”
He added that Democrats have “gotten crazier” and pushed back on Morales' claim that Maher had said the party “left” him. “You're putting a title on something that somewhat accurately expresses my point of view,” Maher corrected. “I know me better than you.”
Maher has been increasingly vocal about his issues with the left. Just last week, he called out The View and blasted Whoopi Goldberg for comparing life in America for Black citizens to the plight of women in Iran. “That’s insane,” he said Friday night.
He also agreed with Democratic Senator John Fetterman’s warning that support for anti-ICE protests would backfire. “When people see the burning Waymo car and the guy waving a Mexican flag, it’s going to help Trump,” Maher said.
On the podcast, Morales praised Maher’s use of the phrase “woke supremacist.” He said some liberals act tolerant but are “the most intolerant” when it comes to canceling people. “Relax — that’s somebody’s living,” he added.
Despite his criticism, Morales said he still aligns with Democrats. “I still identify as a liberal at heart,” he said. “But my definition of liberal is someone who wants to change the status quo for the better.”
Maher didn’t disagree — but made one thing clear. He may vote blue, but he never pledged allegiance.
