Christie Smythe was living the good life. She had a great job with Bloomberg News, a good husband who loved her, and she decided to throw it all away...for another man.
The man she gave her good life for is a joke and has got to be the worst decision that she's made in her entire life.
That man is the biggest douche on the planet, "Pharma Bro" Martin Shkreli.
He is still serving a 7-year sentence for hedge-fund fraud, to falling in love with him. She has left her husband and quit her job to pursue her relationship with the convicted felon in a bizarre tale that has gone viral on social media.
Smythe, who studied journalism at the University of Missouri, broke the news of Shkreli's arrest for Bloomberg News but later became a strong advocate for Shkreli following their love affair. Her comments in favor of Shkreli caused Smythe to fall out of favor with Bloomberg and she now faces an uncertain professional future.
Without a job or husband, Smythe found herself kissing Shkreli in a room that "smelled of chicken wings" during a visit to jail.
"They couldn’t touch beyond a chaste hug and kiss, per prison rules, and have never slept together, but the relationship moved forward through continued visits, phone calls, and emails," Elle’s Stephanie Clifford wrote.
The two grew closer and the ex-Bloomberg reporter even froze her eggs so she could have children with Shkreli upon his release from jail.
In a shocking twist, Shkreli then stopped talking to Smythe because she spoke about their relationship to Elle.
"When Shkreli found out about this article, though, he stopped communicating with her. He didn’t want her telling her story, she says. Smythe thinks it’s because he’s worried about fallout for her. While she waits to hear from him, she monitors Google Alerts for his name, posts in support groups for loved ones of inmates, and—because inmates must place outgoing calls and can’t accept incoming ones—hopes one day he will call or reply to one of her emails," Clifford wrote, noting that the former Bloomberg reporter hasn’t lost interest.
Without a job and husband, Smythe hopes for a future with Shkreli and has even frozen her eggs to have children with him following his release from prison. After speaking of her relationship with Shkreli with Elle magazine, Shkreli stopped communicating with her as he did not want her to tell her story.
