The media with some help from the internet revealed to everyone that massive trenches were being dug on New York City's Hart Island in order to bury some of the unclaimed or unknown individuals who have come into the hospitals in New York City over the last couple of months.
Media outlets played this up like it was something so bizarre and how could this even be happening, when in reality the true story is a little different than what they're making it out to be.

The truth is Hart Island has been a location that has been used to bury unclaimed bodies for over 150 years. As a matter of fact, it's estimated that around 1,000,000 people have been buried on the island since the Civil War.
Very few living New Yorkers have ever even caught a glimpse of the area that’s home to the largest mass gravesite in the United States. The city of New York has tried to hide the island from the public and trespassing is taken very seriously by local authorities. Even the ferry to the Island was shut down in 1976.
Located just a stone’s throw away from the Bronx, this island is currently a dumping ground for deceased New Yorkers whose bodies haven’t been claimed by family members. To add to the macabre nature of it all, the bodies are dumped in trenches by Riker’s Island prison inmates, who often construct makeshift coffins to mark the graves. Astonishingly, it’s been estimated that between 750,000 to a million people have been buried there since the Civil War. The current population of New York is around 8 million.
The mass cemetery is also used to bury amputated body parts. We thought you should know that.

The number of burials has gone up since this coronavirus outbreak, as it is reported that only about 25 bodies are buried on the island per week. Now they're doing around 24 burials per day.
