The 2017 NFL season has kicked off much like the 2016 season ended. As NFL players kneel during the national anthem, the ratings crash.

The season opened up on Thursday night with the Kansas City Chiefs traveling to take on the New England Patriots. When compared to last season's opener the ratings were down 13%.

It's been half  a decade since a season opener pulled in ratings this low. This is terrible news for the NFL, whose ratings have been nosediving ever since the players developed a love for kneeling during the national anthem.

This season it seems to be an equally popular move to sit during the anthem. Marcus Peters of the Chiefs joined in on the festivities.

During the preseason 12 Cleveland Browns players took a knee during the anthem. Cleveland police officers are so angry they have refused to participate in the raising of the flag during home games.

“The players not standing for the national anthem is offensive because of the sacrifices that people make that allows these guys to enjoy the success that they have,” Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Steve Loomis said. “While they’re benefiting from protection of the flag, they are kneeling in disrespect of it.”

What can the NFL do to counter these plummeting ratings? It seems the further left they push, the lower the ratings go. It is a trend they aren't willing to fight.
