Former MSNBC political commentator Krystal Ball has made claims that she was required to obtain the network president's approval before voicing any criticism of Hillary Clinton in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election. The New York Post reported that Ball revealed the constraints during an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast on Spotify.

Ball, who is a previous co-host of "The Cycle" on MSNBC and a former Democratic Party congressional candidate, disclosed that she received pushback for expressing her critical views about Clinton in 2014. Her allegations highlight the level of editorial control and restrictions that existed within the network during the election cycle.

Ball told Rogan, "I did this whole thing that was like, 'She sold out to Wall Street. People are gonna hate this lady. She's like the terrible candidate for the moment. Please don't run.'"

Initially, the former MSNBC anchor stated that her monologue had been authorized.

"I was allowed to say it," Ball stated. "I deliver my thing. I did it exactly how I wanted to do it. Afterward, I get pulled into an office."

Ball clarified that she was informed by the network president at the time, Phil Griffin, that she needed to seek approval if she wanted to offer any commentary about Clinton in the future. Despite this, Ball mentioned that she continued to make comments about Clinton in subsequent broadcasts, but the reprimand had an impact on the degree to which she criticized the presidential candidate.

"I did further Hillary Clinton commentary, there's no doubt about it. But I would love to say that didn't affect me, and I was just there to be a truth teller," Ball continued. "But, listen, I'm a human being. I'm sure I responded to the incentives in that system of, like, 'God, I don't want to get in trouble with the boss.'"

"For sure," Rogan replied.

"That's a very blatant example, but oftentimes people know where the boundaries are. They know what they're allowed to say, and so they don't need that direct intervention of censorship," she continued.
