Dr. Anthony Fauci stated recently that he doesn't believe that there is any reason why we should undergo another round of nationwide lockdown in order to keep the coronavirus at bay.

He said that believes a more localized approach to tackling the virus would work better.

Dr. Fauci said, “I don't think we're going to be talking about going back to lockdown,” in reference to recent upticks in caseloads in places like California and Texas. Instead of widespread lockdowns, he suggested, “I think we're going to be talking about trying to better control those areas of the country that seem to be having a surge of cases.”

Dr. Fauci’s statements come just a few days after New York and Texas officials warned about the potential for reinstating lockdowns. While there are indications New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had in mind a local approach, the state is just now exiting one of the most severe and prolonged lockdowns of anywhere in the country.

Having official guidance from an influential member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force will surely help offset fears of overzealous government officials. The widespread shutdowns were conducted in large part due to the recommendations of Dr. Fauci. Now that he is recommending more local and targeted responses, his recommendations can be used as a counter to governors and mayors seeking to reinstate strict lockdown measures.

Another major concern many people have is when schools can reopen. Many families have had their schedules upended due to their children being at home as opposed to in school. Dr. Fauci also addressed school reopening with the following recommendations (credit: Yahoo News):

Counties where there are certainly no cases at all, there's no problem with these schools opening.

There are other parts where there's a modest amount of infection in which they may delay school openings.

And there are other parts of the country where there's minimum infection, where you want to make some modification of the process, namely: alternate days, morning versus afternoon, seating people apart from each other wearing masks.

I think that a more specifically targeted approach is closer to the right path for handling the virus, but still not perfect.
