Over the summer, activists in Oakland, California sprawled the words, “All Black Trans Queer Nonbinary Women’s Disabled Imprisoned Lives Matter” on a busy public boulevard in pastel colors.
In San Francisco, “Black Lives Matter was written in giant yellow letters over a three-block stretch on a busy public road. Another street in Martinez, California also had the words “Black Lives Matter” painted in large bright letters.
Yet when a “White Lives Matter” banner was hung in Union City last week, it was labeled as illegal and vandalism because it hung on public property. The city therefore ordered it removed.

Local officials called the banner “racist” and declared it a “despicable act of vandalism.”
“This morning a ‘White Lives Matter’ banner was removed from the corner of Smith Street and Dyer Street. It was illegally placed on public property,” the city stated.
“The City is disgusted by this despicable act of vandalism that has occurred on the heels of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last week and on the weekend of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday that celebrates the life and achievements of this important civil rights leader,” the statement continued.
They added, “A police report has been filed. The City Council and the Human Relations Commission, along with the UCPD and City staff, remain on heightened alert to make sure racist incidences like this do not happen again in our community.”
It’s unclear who put the banner up or what their motivations were, but what we do know for sure is that no one was charged with or accused of a “hate crime” for taking it down.
However, when a couple showed up and started painting over the Black Lives Matter mural in Martinez, they were charged with a “hate crime.”
And this summer, the conservative group Judicial Watch was reportedly sent packing when it wanted to paint its motto, “Because No One is Above the Law,” on a street in Washington, D.C., which at the time was home to a massive “Black Lives Matter” mural that activists later added the phrase “Defund the Police” to.

Native American Tribe Condemns Biden Administration’s Secretarial Order
On Thursday, January 21, the day after President Joe Biden’s inauguration, a Native American tribe issued a blistering letter to Biden’s Acting Secretary of the Interior, Scott de la Vega, blasting his Secretarial Order No. 3395. As Energy In Depth reports, the Order “temporarily suspends delegations of authority regarding leasing and permitting on federal lands, with a significantly reduced staff able to approve such items. This order does not halt leasing or existing development, and at its face is a temporary measure, but is certain to create bottlenecks that last well-beyond the 60-day limit on the order.”
De la Vega started serving on January 21, and will remain in an interim capacity until Biden’s nominee, Deb Haaland, is confirmed. The Department of the Interior defended Order No. 3395 by writing, “The Order does not impact existing ongoing operations under valid leases and does not preclude the issuance of leases, permits and other authorizations by those specified. In addition, any actions necessary in the event of an incident that might pose a threat to human health, welfare, or safety will continue.”
