Detroit Lions Owner Bribed Players To Stand For Anthem

Need proof that NFL owners are desperate for their players to stand during the anthem? Detroit Lions owner Martha Ford bribed players by offering donations.

In order to get her players to stand for the anthem, Ford is offering not only donations, but also her name toward the philanthropic pursuit of their choice.

Per Detroit Free Press:

“As a team, we came together, talked to Mrs. Ford, the owners, and we understand the issues for the most part, generally,” running back Ameer  Abdullah said. “Me personally, I definitely want to be an aid in growing the social awareness in this country, that it is a race problem in this country.

“We do dance around the topic a lot and Mrs. Ford has come forward and said that as long a we compromise as a team and unify and make a unified demonstration, she’ll back us financially. So I’m definitely going to hold her to her word.”

Ford, who linked arms with players, Lions coach Jim Caldwell and her three daughters at Ford Field last week, was not on the sideline for the anthem Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, where the Lions played the Minnesota Vikings.  The Lions did not immediately return a phone call from the Free Press seeking comment.

Despite the cash bribe, two Detroit Lions kneeled: linebackers Steven Longa and Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

The trend of kneeling during the national anthem was started during the 2016 season by Colin Kaepernick. In 2016 Kaepernick said:

“I’m going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me, this is something that has to change. When there’s significant change and I feel that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, and this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.”

Since then there have been some people who chose to kneel, sit, etc. along with Kaepernick.

Recently President Trump expressed his dismay over the refusal to stand for the national anthem. He suggested fans not watch and owners to fire the players who do this.

There was also a speech President Trump gave in Huntsville, Alabama in support of Republican Sen. Luther Strange.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out,” Trump said. “He’s fired. He’s fired!”

Following this speech and these tweets the number of players not standing during the anthem increased tenfold.
