President Trump Breaks Campaign Promise – Tells Dreamers They Can Rest Easy

President Trump said that immigrants who were granted amnesty through Obama’s 2012 immigration executive action Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals that they can rest easy. That’s right, President Trump breaks campaign promise by telling Dreamers they can rest easy and by not terminating DACA.

While on the campaign trail, Trump assured people he would “immediately terminate” DACA. DACA protects hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who deported to this country as children. During an interview with the Associate Press on Friday it became very clear that Trump has changed his tune. He said that his administration is “not after the dreamers.”

“We are after the criminals,” President Trump said. “That is our policy.”

This comment differs greatly from what he said on the campaign trail.

Per the Daily Caller:

“We will immediately terminate President Obama’s two illegal executive amnesties, in which he defied federal law and the constitution to give amnesty to approximately 5 million illegal immigrants,” Trump said during a speech in Phoenix in August. “In a Trump Administration, all immigration laws will be enforced. As with any law enforcement activity, we will set priorities. But, unlike this Administration, no one will be immune or exempt from enforcement — and ICE and Border Patrol officers will be allowed to do their jobs.”

“Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation — that is what it means to have laws and to have a country.”

Many people may have seen this move coming. President Trump began to really crack down on immigration in February. In February there was no mention of DACA. On top of that, his team avoided giving a direct answer when asked when the president planned on ending DACA.

Even by December, Trump had softened when it comes to his opinion on DACA.

“We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud,” then president-elect Trump told Time magazine. “They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.”

During another press conference President Trump acknowledged that DACA is a very difficult situation. He expands on it a bit here, but refuses to give a full answer regarding what he plans to do with it moving forward. He goes on to acknowledge several times how difficult of a situation this is. While this is a campaign promise that Trump is breaking, it is yet to be determined what type of impact this will have on his support. What do you think about President Trump breaking a campaign promise? Do you think he thought more of it and moved on to make a better decision or is DACA something he should have ended?
